Synopsis:
This is a technical workshop, made up of lectures and hands-on lab work to teach the IS-IS and BGP skills required for the configuration and operation of large-scale networks that make up the Internet.
Workshop topics include, but are not limited to:
- IS-IS design and best practices for Service Provider networks
- BGP protocol, attributes, and policy control
- BGP scalability (including Route Reflectors and Communities)
- BGP Best Practices, including Aggregation
- BGP multihoming techniques (redundancy and load balancing)
- BGP Communities as used by Network Operators
- Peering Best Practices
Objectives:
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Configure IS-IS within their network infrastructure, according to industry best practices.
- Know how to operate a dual stack network, and be aware of the similarities and differences between IPv4 and IPv6.
- Be conversant in the BGP protocol, and know how to use the different BGP attributes to achieve different policies.
- Configure BGP policies to implement peering with other operators, either using private interconnects, or at Internet Exchange Points.
- Be aware of IXP design and operational good practices.
- Be aware of the best practices for using BGP on the Internet today, including Aggregation and Scaling.

Target Audience:
Technical staff who are now building or operating a wide area service provider network with international and/or multi-provider connectivity, or considering participation at an Internet Exchange point, or considering deploying IPv6 across their infrastructure and to their end users.
Pre-requisites:
It is assumed that the workshop participants are proficient with a router command line interface, have a good understanding of OSPF or IS-IS, as well as experience with using BGP in an operational network.
This workshop is not an introduction. Participants are expected to have already successfully completed previous Routing Workshops or have demonstrable equivalent experience.
The lab exercises use Cisco IOS configuration syntax.
Participants must bring laptops with a modern web browser installed (Chrome/Firefox/Safari/Opera).
Participants must also have reviewed the Video Tutorials at learn.nsrc.org, specifically those covering Internet Routing.

THNIC Academy, in partnership with BKNIX and the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC), successfully held the BGP Peering & IXP Workshop 2026 from May 27 – 30, 2026 at Centara Grand at CentralWorld. The intensive four-day program drew 32 network professionals from Thailand, Bhutan, and Myanmar, underscoring a joint commitment to regional capacity building.
The training focused on advanced network operations and Internet connectivity, covering key topics such as IS-IS network design, BGP operations and routing policies, network scalability, multihoming, peering best practices, and Internet Exchange Point (IXP) management.
Participants benefited from a combination of expert-led lectures and intensive hands-on laboratory sessions delivered by NSRC instructors. The training program was specifically designed to provide practical experience that can be directly applied to real-world network operations, enabling participants to enhance the reliability, security, and scalability of their network infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the Internet ecosystem.
In addition to enhancing technical skills, the workshop provided opportunities for participants to exchange experiences, build professional networks, and share operational best practices with peers from across the region.
The workshop was held alongside BKNIX Peering Forum & ThaiNOG Day 2026, one of the region’s premier events for networking, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among Internet service providers (ISPs), cloud service providers, content delivery networks (CDNs), research and education networks, regulatory bodies, and digital infrastructure leaders from across Thailand and the international community. Together, these events continue to support the development of a more robust, secure, and interconnected Internet infrastructure throughout the region.
